Snow, Wind, and a Few Trophy Moments
They say timing is everything when it comes to fishing. If that’s true, then we nailed it — if you’re aiming to experience all four seasons in a single weekend.
I met up with two of my good bros at the lake Saturday afternoon. We rolled in with decent weather and hopes high. But true to Cariboo form, Mother Nature saw our optimism and raised us two inches of snow by Sunday morning. Because, why not?
Sunday was a grind. No fish for me — which, of course, made it all the more heartwarming to watch the guys I was with double up on their catches. A couple other anglers on the lake were lighting it up too. I guess someone forgot to send me the memo on fly selection. Or maybe the fish just aren’t that into me. Either way, it was humbling.
The wind blew, the snow came, the fish didn’t (that day). And still… it was a good trip.
A Mixed Bag (and I’m Not Just Talking Weather)
Fishing conditions over those few days were textbook Cariboo chaos — sunshine, wind, snow, repeat. Not exactly ideal, but it sure made for a memorable backdrop. And despite the numbers, I still had some wins:
– Caught my first fish at that lake (finally)
– Didn’t lose a single piece of gear (rare)
– Landed multiple fish in the 20”-24” range— which, let’s be honest, are still trophy fish in my book
Add to that a few solid belly laughs, some good food, a bit of shared whiskey, and that feeling of being in the right place with the right people — it’s hard to call that anything but a win.
So What Makes a Good Trip?
For me, it’s not the fish count. It’s:
The right people (check). Some good grub and drink (check). And an attitude of gratitude (shockingly, I had that too). Sure, I went home with a little less pride in my fly choices, but with a whole lot more in the memory bank.
And in the end, that’s the kind of trip I’ll always show up for!
